Easy Vegan Smoothie Recipe (That Isn’t Gross or Weird)

Plus: no added sugar, no BS protein powders, gums, kale, spinach, etc.

150 g fresh or frozen fruit — ripe!

60 g super-ripe banana

100 ml plain soymilk

10 g tahini or other nut or seed butter

3 ml vanilla extract

Random spices that sound good (I use cardamom and cayenne)

Throw everything into a blender. If using frozen fruit, you may need to thaw first, unless your blender doubles as a wood chipper.

After blending, wait about 5 min. before drinking. For whatever reason, this seems to allow the flavors to really come together.

FAQ:

What fruits should I use in my smoothie?

I’m a fan of single-fruit smoothies but rotate between peach, mango, strawberry, raspberry, cherry (tart or sweet), and blueberry. My favorites: mango or peach, altho peaches have a lot of sorbitol, which can cause me pain. Banana smoothies are also incredible but mine follow a slightly different formula.

Recommendations for soymilk?

Plain and unsweetened without any gums or other additives. I make my own in a nifty little nutmilk maker (ChefWave) but like Edensoy and Westsoy too, which are both shelf-stable and sold in aseptic packs. BTW, the soymilks in the refrigerator section at the grocery store are ALL filled with gums and other crap, likely in an attempt to pass soymilk off as something low calorie, which it isn’t. Don’t drink that shit.

What about almond milk?

If you like almond milk, use it. I personally am not a fan, and unless it’s homemade, it tends to have additives, too.

What’s wrong with oatmilk?

Unless it’s homemade, it’s full of gums and garbage. It’s time to face facts: almost every processed, convenient thing in a grocery store is. Soymilk, however, is really the only alternative milk one I’ve found with options that aren’t full of extras AND those are full of protein and taste without any additives. Again, it’s really up to you as to which milk you use.

Why is my mango smoothie weirdly gelatinous?

Yeah, that happens. I love it: like pudding. My 24YO son says it reminds him of snot. Oh well.

Can I put peanut butter in this smoothie?

Yes but then you’ll have less peanut butter to secret-eat directly from the jar. Ditto for almond butter. They both are, however, delicious in smoothies. Tahini, however, adds a hint of bitterness that really enhances the fruit flavor.

Why no maple or honey or other sweeteners?

Super-ripe fruit is delicious. There is zero reason to cover it up with sweet. If you disagree, try cutting out sugar for a while (weeks or months — and expect some pain while you do) before making this smoothie again.
